On a most auspicious note, Ekurede Community today witnessed a moment rich in symbolism and tradition, as His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, paid a royal visit for the Ugwa Olu ceremony, a sacred rite through which the throne connects with Iwere communities. This visit marked the official conclusion of Ekurede’s turn in the revered palace watch, Ghigho Aghofen.
It was three months ago that the people of Ekurede stepped into this royal duty with joy, marching in numbers, their steps led by the rhythm of drums and songs of allegiance.

As today’s ceremony commenced, the skies opened in a heavy downpour, yet the spirit of the people only rose higher. Undeterred by the rain, they danced, sang, and rejoiced, turning what could have been a disruption into a divine affirmation. The rain was received as blessing: sacred, timely, and cleansing, a fitting companion to a day of such spiritual significance.

In keeping with tradition, a representative of the community’s leadership delivered a welcome address, offering gratitude to His Majesty for the honor of participating in Ghigho Aghofen, and candidly highlighting the challenges the community continues to face.
The ceremony came to an apex as His Majesty took a customary walk through the community to the waters. There, His Majesty proclaimed a blessing over the people, the land, and the waters, invoking peace, protection, and prosperity upon Ekurede and all her sons and daughters. It was a gesture that transcended ceremony, affirming the enduring bond between the crown and its people.
